How many times have you looked at someone else's artwork and thought, "Wow, they have such a nice style. It's so pretty. I wish mine were that good," only to look at your own with it's own unique style?
The thing is, we all have a different style. It may not be like someone else's and it may not be as pretty or as great, to us, but it is ours. It's unique only to us. It could always use improvements and that comes with time and practice but that doesn't make it any less good than it is.
It's like the story of the little girl who looks at the building across the street from hers. When she looks at it every day at the same time its windows glitter like diamonds. Well one day she walked over to the building to see it up close only to see that it was only a dull building just like the one she lives it. As she turned around to walk back to her own building she looked up to see her buildings windows were glittering like diamonds. She looked at it in awe at how beautiful her own building was.
I used to think back on that story and I thought that the building across from her was merely reflecting her own buildings shine. When I think about it now... Nothing was being reflected. Both buildings were beautiful in their own right but it's a matter of perspective. In this case it was a physical perspective. When she saw it up close she could see all it's flaws but when she took a step back it was just as beautiful as she believed the building across the street from hers was.
Often times I will see great artists attempt a "draw this again" picture. The original was from 2008 and the new one was from 2014. When I look at them both I don't see improvements, mainly because I didn't draw it myself and haven't experienced the artists growth, but rather I see two equally very beautiful pictures that look completely different but at the same time just look like they are two different styles. These pictures I usually don't comment on because I honestly don't want to offend the artist. They see improvement where I don't yet I only see a different drawing style that is still just as pretty as the first.
Sometimes we just need to see things from a different perspective. We can look at our own artwork and think how badly it sucks but someone else can look at our artwork and think it's an amazing piece. Sometimes taking a step back can do wonders.
I heard a story of buddhist monks once. They strive for perfection every day but they know perfection can never be reached. Because perfection can never be reached they can strive for perfection every day forever growing and getting better until the end of time. They never end thus will be better than they ever thought they could be. In the end always reach for perfection. You will never reach it but rather reach beyond it because you never stopped.
I hope you all have a good day and keep working to get better. You will reach your goal and further as long as you don't give up. You are all wonderful.
